You don't need a $3,000/month SEO agency to rank on Google. Most small business sites are leaving traffic on the table because of the same handful of fixable mistakes — and fixing them takes an afternoon, not a contract.
These aren't tricks or hacks. They're the fundamentals that Momentum flags on every free SEO audit we run. Fix these five things and you'll be ahead of 80% of your local competitors.
1 Fix Your Meta Titles and Descriptions
Your meta title is the blue link Google shows in search results. Your meta description is the grey text underneath. Together, they're your first impression — and most small business sites either ignore them or use generic defaults like "Home" or "Welcome to our website."
Why it matters for small business SEO: Google uses your title to understand what your page is about. A clear, keyword-rich title means Google is more likely to show your page for relevant searches — and more likely to get clicked when they do.
How to fix it:
- Keep titles under 60 characters (Google truncates anything longer)
- Include your main keyword near the front: "Plumber in Austin, TX — Same-Day Emergency Service"
- Write descriptions under 160 characters. Think of them as ad copy — tell people what they'll get and why to click
- Every page on your site should have a unique title and description

2 Clean Up Your Heading Structure
Your page headings (H1, H2, H3) aren't just visual — they're how Google understands what your content is about and which parts are most important. Missing or misused headings are one of the most common small business SEO issues we see.
The rule is simple: each page should have exactly one H1 (your main topic) and then H2s and H3s that break down the content logically underneath it. Think of it like a document outline.
Common mistakes to avoid:
- Multiple H1s on one page — confuses Google about which topic is primary
- Skipping from H1 to H3 — breaks the hierarchy
- Using headings for styling only — if you're using H2 because it "looks big," use CSS instead
- No H1 at all — surprisingly common, especially on homepages with just a logo
Your H1 should clearly state what the page is about and include your main keyword naturally. Don't stuff it — just be accurate.
3 Add Alt Text to Every Image
Alt text (the alt="" attribute on image tags) does two things: it tells visually impaired users what an image shows, and it tells Google what the image contains. Google cannot "see" images — it reads the alt text.
Missing alt text is a guaranteed finding on almost every DIY SEO audit. It's also one of the easiest fixes: you just add a short, descriptive label to each image on your site.
How to write good alt text:
- Describe what's actually in the image: "Plumber fixing kitchen sink under cabinet"
- Include your keyword naturally where it fits: "Austin plumber replacing hot water heater"
- Keep it under 125 characters
- Don't start with "image of" or "photo of" — Google knows it's an image
- Decorative images (dividers, icons) can use
alt=""to be skipped by screen readers
In practice: Most website builders (WordPress, Squarespace, Wix) let you add alt text in the image upload dialog. You don't need a developer. Just go back through your pages and fill in the blanks.
4 Build Internal Links Between Your Pages
Internal linking means linking from one page on your site to another. It's one of the most underused free SEO fixes available — and it takes literally zero technical skill to implement.
Why does it matter? Google uses internal links to discover content and to understand which pages are most important. Pages with no internal links pointing to them are often never ranked. Pages with lots of relevant internal links pointing to them tend to rank higher.
A simple internal linking strategy for small businesses:
- Every service page should link to at least 2 other related pages
- Blog posts should link to your service/product pages (this is called a "pillar" strategy)
- Your homepage should link to your most important pages — not just through the nav
- Use descriptive anchor text: "learn about our roof inspection service" beats "click here"
A quick audit of your site will show you which pages have zero inbound internal links — those are your orphaned pages, invisible to Google.
5 Speed Up Your Page Load Time
Page speed is a confirmed Google ranking factor — and it's something most small business sites are failing at without realizing it. A site that takes 6 seconds to load loses roughly half its visitors before they even see it.
You don't need a developer to get meaningful speed improvements. The biggest culprits are almost always images and plugins.
The fastest wins:
- Compress your images — use a free tool like Squoosh or TinyPNG before uploading. A 3MB hero image can become 200KB with zero visible quality loss
- Use WebP format — it's smaller than JPEG or PNG and supported by all modern browsers
- Remove unused plugins — every WordPress plugin adds load time, even inactive ones
- Enable caching — most hosting providers offer this with one click in their control panel
- Use a CDN for images — Cloudflare's free tier is excellent for small businesses
Test your current speed at Google PageSpeed Insights (free). Aim for a score above 70 on mobile — that's where most of your traffic comes from.
